I began this quilt the Autumn of 2008 and it sat in a box until after our move to Florida and life settled down.

When I pulled it out to work on it, there was no zing! It just sat there. Even though the forest prints (more about those later) are in 4 different colors which remind me of the different seasons, it always felt like autumn.

I decided to take Autumn as a theme and added the leaves. The leaves are all fused twice, once to a muslin and then to the quilt itself. I wanted them to float above the seams of the piecing underneath them.

To applique them, I used a tiny zigzag and couched cording around each stem and leaf.

The four forest prints are printed using a linoleum plate that is cut with carving tools into the image you see. It was then printed onto the fabric using a printing press.

I did these when I was a student at Northern Kentucky University in my non-class time. Assignments did not include instruction for printing on fabric!

The piecing is free form curves. I also added some black fabric squares which seem to frame small sections of the piecing.

The leaf fronds were done last and seem to float above the quilt. I also did skeleton leaf fronds that have the shape couched in cording alone.
